It was actually possible to do this and get away with it bitd. Before video cameras were covering every square inch of everywhere. This was usually a part of our hotel stays, but usually the stairwells instead of hallways. But not always 😛😁

She was nice - it was worth it. As long as it was not assault that will have little consequence. Its not acceptable of course as this can scare other guests, or provoke some people. Her screaming didnt help. But this hotel has terrible service. If they didnt have a room they should immediately have offered the couple a cheap room and breakfast as a normal courtesy.
